Primary school teachers to strike on March 30th

On the first week of March the members of the teacher unions, the ASTI, INTO and TUI, voted to “take industrial action, up to and including strike action, over the government’s handling of the economic crisis” (see TUI press release). In the past few days, ICTU have begun organising a one-day strike on March 30th, which would result in the closure of around 3,200 primary schools around the country.

General Secretary of the INTO,  John Carr, also pointed out that the prospect of a “work to rule” could not be ruled out, something to be discussed by the three main teacher unions at a meeting this coming week.

Teachers United, “a group of grassroots activists from across the three Teacher Unions ASTI, INTO & TUI”, have recently started a blog at http://teachersunited.wordpress.com/. The ICTU website, www.ictu.ie, remains rather behind in delivering up-to-date news of ballots, protests & strikes such as the one outlined above.
